Dug - my view is that the risk of an engine fire in a diesel B31 is so remote vs. a gas boat that the automatic fire system is simply not warranted from a cost and maintaince point of view, plus the danger of an inadvertant discharge that may damage the engines.
Couple this with the fact that the B31, with our huge engine boxes, allows instant access to the engines to put out any fire with a good hand held extinguisher. Compare this to boats with engines under the deck you can't get to.
One of the beauties of the B31 with diesels is you just don't need an automatic system - to me the downsides far outweigh the upsides. My advice is to have 3 or 4 good 5# hand units on board. If you can't put a fire out with those, time for a swim.
