My life ring hangs behind the port rear window in my B28 and a kid with a pellet rifle used it for a target a few years ago. Tiny pieces of glass everywhere. To hurry and get some glass back in, I used laminated instead of tempered. It cracked the first time I got into rough water. Do it right and have the pieces cut then tempered. As for price, I'm not sure, but it should be less than most boat upgrade projects.
