Traveling with rods

Has anyone had any experience traveling with rods and reels? I want to bring a pair of flyrods and reels to the UVI. One is a 3-piecer and the other a 4-piecer. I'd really prefer to hand carry them even if I have to buy a 4-piecer to replace the 3 piece one, but given the strict rules, don't know if they'll let me. I KNOW I can't hand carry my flies (hooks not allowed), but the reels are so damned expensive, I'd sure like to keep them in my hand luggage. Concerned that line might not be allowed both because I might strangle someone and because fly line looks like a long detonation fuse. Has anyone had any experiences. We're flying American with a stop in Miami. Walter
