Lorenzo,
There has been some earlier discussions about re-lining the old fiberglass tank with vinylester and there's one fellow who is a fiberglass technician that believes it can be done.
I, on the other hand have serious doubts about the longevity of that approach. The problem that I see has to do with the adhesion of the coating, even if fiberglass mat is added, to the old fiberglass that has been long soaked in gasoline...
To work in the long haul, I think that a more plausible approach might be to add enough fiberglass to become more structural within itself.
The tank interior would still have to be pressure cleaned and ground down to insure as much adhesion as possible.
In essence using the original tank as a parent mold to build a minimum of 3/16" of thickness, then vinylester gelcoated. Once complete for both the tank body and top, the top would be re-glassed to the tank with epoxy resin & re-installed into the boat.
The vinylester & fiberglass liner, since it would be supported by the old tank as a shell could be done with a chopper gun to minimize expense. One downside to doing this is that it will decrease the fuel capacity of the tank...
The original baffles are made of aluminum and would wisely be replaced with 304 or higher stainless steel.
Best regards,
Patrick
