AJ update

Just returned from the very depressing city of New Orleans and a visit to AJ. Seabrook Marine has done a lot to get the yard up and running and the place almost looks normal, other than the hundreds of damaged boats blocked up in a field. They still suffer from an acute shortage of labor.

AJ's half tower is repaired in a nice manner, the welder did a nice job. The hull cracks around the struts have been repaired and faired in. The new Phasor 6.5 KW genset is installed and has some nice features such as an oil filter you can get to, a remote air filter, electric fuel pump - nice looking unit and appears a little more compact that the old 5.5 KW.

The new flybridge venturi windshield is fabricated but not installed. Next step is to install the new struts, put the shafts and rudders back in, then do some paint work. The two painters the yard had just quit. Yard has quit taking more boats for repair, say no more until August. My guess is AJ should be done in 6 to 8 weeks. Delivered the spare Lee Sr. tube to replace the one bent. They have the stb. deck out and also the stb. exhaust to get at the struts. Slow, slow, slow, but we are all playing the hand we were dealt by Katrina, and that's just the way it is.

Drove around some residential neighborhoods near the yard and a few people are living in FEMA travel trailers in the driveways of their wrecked homes, but not many. The magnitude of the destruction is still stunning some 7 months after the storm. I fear it will look the same 10 years from now.
