Peter,

Small hole are usually delt with by countersinking the hole, wiping clean with denatured alcohol, and then plugging with thickened epoxy. The epoxy putty rolls that you cut a slice of and knead to mix are also a good filler. Over fill the prepared hole slightly to allow for shrinkage, allow to cure for a couple of days & sand fair.
