Tiller arms

It appears now that I am installing Cabrera's fuel tank that the tiller arms are too long for the connecting bars to come togeather. Several options here I believe. FIrst shorten the arms (cut and braze), second buy new arms.
If cutting and brazing I thought I might put them on facing astern which would gain me some space especially behind the tank. Is there any problem doing this and using Blue Sea's steering?
Also, does anyone have a source for the steering arms in this configuration? My rudders have square tops.
THanks
Mikey
