We use 3 piece rods and carry them on when traveling, with no problem.
We have on the boats Cam sigler's and temple forks, with Abel Super 14's and X-Stream 12-14's. The Super 14s are great. The X-Streams, we will see over time.
The siglers dont break unless there is user error. We use 14wts, and in the future I will buy the 15/16's. We have done Marlin with the 14's. Since we bought them, we have conservatively 600 sails on the rods/reels. Marlin, I dont know the count of, but it is less than 10.
The backup rods are penn 13's 2 piece, and temple fork 14's. We had a TF14 grenade last week and break in 5 pieces.
Let me check on pricing for you. We get good deals typically. For the TF, the last time we bought, ti was less than half what you quoted.
The sages, everyone buys since they cast well and can be used for tarpon. They dont have enough ass in them for the lifting, and break explosively, just like the temple fork did last week. They are coming out with a new billfish 15/16, but we have not used it yet.
