we use to catch them with a frayed piece of nylon rope. They would swim around the docks in TX trying to eat small fish. I was trying to hook one when some old dude came by and dangled a piece of rope in the water. Next thing I knew one was flopping on the dock. Seems the rope gets tangled in their impressive dentures. Done let them bite you they don't call them alligator gar only because their head is shaped like a gator.
