Kevin,
A built in genset will increase the value of the boat but your talking over 4k minimum.

The Honda EU2000i portable genset is like 48 lbs and can be had on the net for 869 including shipping and a 2 year warrantee.

Draw backs are it has to be outside of course and needs to be fastened down thus it will be subject to salt spray and rough seas and you'll need to carry gas in a gerry can.
Filling a gen set while rocking can be dangerous, but the gen set does have an option of an extended run tank.
Standard run is about 8hrs at half load.
If you are only running lights, it should run 15 to 20 hours.

I know numerous boaters who use these sets.
