From what I remember I believe the ShaftLog is supposed to hold back a large amount of the water if the hose was to rupture or break loose. Only several gallons/minute should flow into boat, enough to overwhelm pumps, but manageable in most circumstances.

Then again on our boats those fittings and logs are easy to access.

A real shame. Wonder if we will ever find out what happened.
