I talked to Cap. Pat about painting B31s at AC year before last. He told me to basically sand the gelcoat off with a DA sander to prep. for painting. He explained that the gelcoat on Bertrams was really thick, and that the cracks are primarily from the gelcoat shrinking over time, and that if you didn't sand the gelcoat down, it'd show. That's what I remember anyway--it might've been after a visit to Charley's blender boat and a few coronas though.......
