They had to be pretty complacent and not alert. To me it would be a very noticable occurance. I had it happen to me (Stuffing box came loose) but one of my passangers said "Do you have a rag for the water coming in the self bailing scuppers at the transom ?)All I know is our boats will still float with 2 feet of water in the bilge at the rear. You never seen anybody like me putting on the life jackets first, then a bucket brigade ,then I isolated the problem immediately and fixed it. Boy was I shaking. Bilge pumps clogged but were both running with just a trickle aft. I was anchored at the time so that compounded the situatiuon. So to me I can't imagine how this would have gone unnoticed. I now have a high water bilge alarm. Put one in and they are Cheap!I lost most of my pumps later including a new hyraulic auto pilot pump, washdown pump,AP compass, holding tank macerator pump and later livewell pump. They are all located in dryer locations now. But I fixed it thanks to an alert crew and we went off fishing after that.Probably total complacency since it was a brand new boat and they were in a protected waterway.
I think Vic has some similar stories of other vessels going down with dripless failure.
