Dave, you and I are in the same boat...(literally, ha ha!) I'm doing my 31 Sedan. It is a full restoration of an original 1962 so exhaust size and shaft size do not matter since I have to replace this old stuff anyway. My floor was rotten and is long gone.
I'm a marine engineer and run a mobile yacht business in FL. Work on a lot of Yanmars, Cummins, Detroits, few Cats. Gotta say the Cummins turn me on. I have pitty on my customers with Yanmars. High HP and low weight= short life span. High HP and small dimensions= no room to work on them, even if they are on a palate in the middle of a room. How many times I wish I could get my hands on the little Jap designer that put salt water hoses behind the intercooler/oil cooler. I will not own one.
My current dilema is the Cummins 4BT 250 or 6BT. The 4 cyl sure fits better. More room on all sides for maintenance. But I'm afraid that Cummins has squeezed too much HP out of 4 cyl. I'm still doing research. Would love some concrete 4BT fuel consumption numbers.
JP
