You'll get a whole load of opinions, and a lot has to do with your needs/desires and who locally is around to help you should you need it.
I had Chrysler 440's that were very tired and when The gas alternatives all insisted on bigger exhausts, I found out that Cummins 210's would accept the diameter exhausts I had, would fit even better than the new Chryslers, would not necessitate a new tank or shafts, it was a no-brainer. This was before all the higher hp Cummins came out.
My fuel consumption went from 20+gpg to 7gph per engine at 20 KT cruise. Annual maintenance went to almost nothing. Oil and fuel filters.
You will hear pretty much the same stories from almost all of your choices.
The Cummins 6 cyl bta's come in 210, 250, 300 and now 315. From 250 up, consider going to 1 1/2" shafts. The Cummins run at lower WOT than Yanmars. 2400 is cruise with 2650 as top. They're heavier and in my opinion simpler-ie: one serpentine belt that lasts forever, one internal engine zinc, etc.
Doc has the Cummins 4 cyl 250 hp engines and loves them. He also seems to go a helluva lot faster than me.
The only criticism I've ever heard is that they're a bit rougher at idle.
The Yanmar guys love their engines and it would be best to get more detailed info from them. They're lighter and run at higher rpm's than Cummins. That being the case, they run slower at the other end of the scale which can be an advantage to some who fish certain species.I have found parts for Cummins at almost every truck supply place at reasonable prices as the 6bt series actually started as Dodge truck engines. Your marinas knowledge of either brand could influence your decision, as would the availability of the local distributor.
Whatever your decision, after you've written your check, you'll be glad you did, and you'll get much of it back if/when you sell. Good luck! Walter
