Taking everyone's advice on LH STE

First of all, thanks guys for all the advice on the engines. I will admit, when the price went from 16k to 10k for the pair, I thought plan B(diesel) would be worth it. I did want to hear "you should be fine" or "diessels can take the punishment," but realisticaly I knew that was unlikely. Thank you for the honesty. I am taking all of your advice and staying away from them. Based on what Bill said alone was enough for me. Fortunately I can go back to plan A which was gas repower. That will be fairly simple compared to re-inventing the wheel.

I still have questions though. Even with a pair Marine Power 350's(plan A) I am not positive as to which transmission to use. I want to eliminate the need for counter rotating engine. Hurth 450 seems to be the likely answer. But which one? 8 degree down angle, verticle drop or is it called offset drop? They are much lighter than velvet drives....I believe less expensive too. I know the engine would be farther aft in the bay due to the shorter length of the Hurth comapared to the velvet 71c's I had in there.

Oh yeah, Bill, I had Chrysler 318's. I installed new heads and exhuast when I baught it last spring. Never got her running right though. I am the one that posted a while back with bent a valve and a pushrod and completely snapped off another valve head in less than 100 gallons of burn. It has been a bad first year of ownership. That is another reason I am taking all of your advice. I need to go fishing instead of skinning knuckles. My boat is a 1980 and I keep it in Marathon Florida.

I would be glad to send pics. I have hundreds ranging from pulling engines(the first time), engine bed reconstruction, Bilge koting everything accessable all the way through my current repowering and painting. Not sure what you meant about the window framework though. I only plan on taking out the aft windows, but not till the last minute. The boat is not under a tent. Need to work fast while the weather is somewhat cool. Thanks again for all the great advice. It is great sharing stories and learing what works and what does not.
Kevin
