This is my business you guys are beating up, and I hate to say it but most of what you say is true. But there ARE marinas out there (just a few) that refuse to operate unethically. I try to deal only with people/businesses who feel the same way, and that includes customers. There are a number of local boat owners who are sucessful businessmen, good reputations, but when they get into my yard, they turn into liars and cheats. They ask for a quote for a bottom job, we find blisters and a loose strut, "oh yeah, fix that stuff too" and then bitch that the cost has gone up. Like we should drop a strut for free. We have a black list of locals we will not let in... and some of them don't know they are on it.
All that aside, the situation on the west coast of Florida is bad. Marinas are turning into condo's so fast it makes your head spin. The costs for marina work will continue to go through the roof. With less competition and developers throwing $$$ around, property owners will demand it. I could not afford to own a boat if I didn't do my own mechanical and get hull work at cost. I feel bad for the little guy who just wants to go fishing...
