Kevin,

Sorry it took so long to reply, my life does not seem to be my own these days.

I'm afraid I agree with the others on the submerged engines. I would especially worry about the after coolers and other external parts. But it sounds like you have pretty much made up your mind. So here are my thoughts.

First, Jim Cook who visits this site has a B28 with 4LH-DTEs setting on the original beds, perhaps he can provide some comments. His boat has a Yanmar (whatever that is) transmission at about 2 to 1 gear ratio and it works just fine. I believe this trans may have an 11 degree down angle and is very compact. I have forgotten what props he is turning, maybe he will let us know.

Second, I believe Bruce (of this site) is currently repowering a B28 and he may be able to offer insite. Talk to some of the pros like Bruce. Also Tony Athens always seems willing to give advice. He repowered a B28 before mine with 4LH-DTEs and used the original beds. He felt it was essential to have the 11 degree down angle ot the Twin Disk 5011 trans in order to get the engines under the deck. If you are willing to raise the deck, then lots of things are possible. The main reason for doing away with the original beds on my boat was to allow for a good fit in the easiest possible way. It was actually cheaper to go this route. Especially since I did all of the removal work.

With the 8 degree down angle trans, you will have to raise the front of the engine to align the shaft and strut. You WILL have to replace the struts and shafts. Shafts will need to be 1.5 inch with the 2/1 gears. You will want struts that are a bit longer to allow a bigger prop. When you do this you will need to raise the back of the motor to align and the front even more. You will almost certainly have to replace the logs with the 1.5 inch shafts. So just cut out the old ones and start over. Align the motors to the struts, get everything in place and last of all glass in new logs to fit.
The project is going to take a lot of planning and thought. And a lot of work. You need to investigate struts, what angle they will be and how far forward thy will push the motors. Don't forget, you want to minimize the shaft angle, which is already very steep, or the bow will push over at lower than desirable speeds.

If the motors will drop between the beds, using custom mounts like are on my boat, you may be able to pull it off. The problem here is the motor becomes very difficult to access. I could go on and on, but this should give you some food for thought. Also, figure on spending substanially more than you plan on.

A few questions:

What year is your boat
where are you located
what power did you have before
could you email some pictures of you project, especially the window frame work.

Keep asking questions and planning!

Bill
