Ernest has a good point. The added expense of doing engine mounts and shaft logs on my boat was minimal compared to the overall cost.
Before I go any further, a few questions. Do you plan to do ALL of the work yourself? Do you plan to do SOME of the work yourself? Do you plan to not do ANY of the work yourself?
As for your questions, It is completely possible to use the old engine beds and there are many B28s running around with Yanmars and the original beds. This will probably require the use of a (I think) TwinDisk 5011A transmission with 10 or 11 degree down angle.
As for gear ratio, My personal feelings is the best set up with a B28 is 1.5 to 1. This will allow a slightly smaller prop diameter and a three blade prop. The 2 to 1 gears will need a slightly bigger 4 blade prop.
The diferrence in cost of 3 blade vs. 4 blade NiBrAl props will pay for a lot of the work on the engine beds.
Before I get carried away, how much of the work to you want to do, or intend to do yourself??
Bill
