Russ - the Cummins 6BTAs are a perfect fit for the B31. The 250 & 270 hp need a 5" exhaust, the 300 and over need a 6". I'm not sure where your existing exhaust is in relation to the shaft logs and your saddle tanks, but if they run inside of the shaft logs that will be tricky making those kinds of bens in a 5" exhaust. Most of the 6BTA installs have to fight the turbo exhaust elbow sweep on the prot engine to keep from having to madify the engine box. It is going to graze the inside (compainway side) of the port box. Stb. side is no issue. But we have all made it work. MY 250s use the stock turbo exhaust sweep, then a custom stainless exhaust with about 4 or 5 various welded contortions, but it works fine to end up on the outboard side of the shaft logs.
You probably won't need the saddle tanks with the diesels, as your range will double. My 72 FBC has the orginal 222 gallon tank and you can't run her out of fuel no matter what you do. Andre's FBC with the same 6BTA 250's as mine has two deck level 50 gal. monel saddle tanks with simple gravity feed ball valves into the main tank and with 322 gal usuable fuel could go a damn long way, like halfway around the world. Go with the Cummins, best engine ever built for the Best Boat Ever Built. Dirt simple engines.
