Rudder Post Help

My rudder posts were leaking and I have removed them so that I can rebed them. Fortunately, the blocks are good. My question is, the old rudder posts had some type of resin spacer. It looks original(green resin) and it looks like the post was set and then resin was poured in from the top to form the space. I assume the did this for alignment reasons, although, it doesnt seem like it did to much. Seems to me like it would be prone to leaking and I would rather use 5200, but wanted to make sure! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
