I made some mounts and used the method that Capt. Patrick outlined for the strut backing. This is pretty much option #3 as you described. Thickened epoxy on the backside to adhere it. I had an issue with working out the air bubbles around the edges. Next time I do this I'm going to cut 45 degree angles on the wood so I don't have all those right angles to work the cloth into. It was a pain working the cloth around the corners.

Just a thought, but I bet if you had an oval piece of wood, angled the edges 45 degrees or better, it would be much easier to work with and look pretty good as well. Uh oh, here I go thinking again.
