Dug: I just finished a full tower recently.. Backing plates are necessary,not only for downward pressure but also for upward pulling. (like a rocking horse) so I decided to use plywood glassed over,bigger the better.Making sure to champhor the edges.
Use thru bolts with washers & tefgel. too.
