Hey Vic,
I painted my rail with Imron a couple of years ago and followed your instructions. Took it right down, etched and primed it. It bubbled up in a couple of months mainly where the rail had been corroded and filled before. Mind you I remember it was a pretty foul day when I painted and maybe the damp surface was to blame. Although I can't help thinking that onece the aluminum is pitted and corroded that badly no prep will stop it screwing up after painting. What do you think?
The reason I'm asking is that the rub rail on my new project, although previously painted with a one part paint, is apart from this, in very good shape ( no pitting etc). I tend to shy away from replacing it with the PVC one as its a RUB RAIL and is pretty tuff when "rubbed" against a dock.
I was thinking of buffing it up instead of painting it but want the shine to last once I've put in the hours of buffing. I know aluminum can go back qickly. Is it worth stripping the old paint off and then buffing it with higher and higher grades of snapaper or would it go back in a matter of days? (I would of course try not to go through the anodized layer)
Your thoughts?
JJ
