Tank & Deck Project

Hello all.

Let me start out by introducing myself. I have a 1968 31sf “Last Minute” and have been lurking around this site for some time. I live in Greenwich CT. and the boat is docked in Cos Cob (Mianus River). I have had the boat for over 10 years and have done the following to her already. Had Hunter Scott install his fly bridge, glassed in the front windows, replaced side windows (American Marine), re power 1998 7.4 mpi Mercs. Replaced back deck with marine plywood glassed over at time of re power.

I use the boat mostly for runs to Montauk for shark, tuna, bass etc. On LI Sound fishing, cocktailing, etc.

This fall I have started the replacement of the fuel tank and have the Bertram deck on the way. Mike Dolans website has inspired me to take the time and to do this right. I will be following Mike’s project very closely. All the work is being done by myself and my loyal crew members all who are craftsmen by trade. Like others on this site I will be looking for some insight from time to time on questions that will come up during this project. At the same time I hope that I can help some of you out with any questions you might have.

Saturday 2-4
Tank was removed. I removed the two plates and looked inside. The tank had all kinds off crud in it. I always had black coffee grounds in my filters so that was no surprise but the white flakes were a surprise. From what I could see they were coming off the walls off the baffles. Like old paint peeling off the wall. I did not see any spot on the tank that appeared to be compromised by any break down of the fiberglass. I think I will be using Atlantic in NJ for the new tank. I used them in the past, any feedback or suggestions on other fabricators would be great.

Question for the board.

1 My steering arms face forward and have the two tie bar system. Has anybody converted to the single tie bar? From what I can see the rudders are to close to the transom and would need to be relocated forward for the tiller arms to fit. I want to use the one bar system to get more room for a lager tank.

Enough for now. Super Bowl Sunday time to chill down some suds.
