Well, here's an idea with a short story. When I had AJ painted with Imron 5000 Bertram white back in late 01, I wanted the original aluminum rub rail painted black, like it was when I became her Steward in the early 90's. The paint the coonass used on the rubrail pre my stewardship was crap and chipped and peeled and I'd scraped it off several years later, but always liked that sheer line of the black rubrail.
So anyway, Seabrook Marine, the boat yard in N.O. that did the Imron (and where AJ is being un-Katrina-ed now) told me I was nuts to paint the rubrail since the paint would not last. I cousulted with many of the Faithful, most notably the Prince of Potions, His Honor, and told the yard how to do it. Well, they bitched and moaned but I reminded them it was MY F**KING BOAT and if I wanted to paint the S.O.B. polka dot, take my money and do it.
Anyway, they did, and it came out spectacular, just stunning. No, it did not peel or blister, but gently banging into a dock here or there put a few nicks in the rubrail paint, not bad, but you know how it is on YOUR F**KING BOAT, you want it perfect. So AJ was in the same yard a year or so ago for a bottom job and I asked how much they wanted to repaint the rub rail. 900 bucks. No thanks.
Sooooo - I went to the Pep Boys by mu office and got one of those little galss jars of auto touch up paint with the little brush in the top. I got glossy black and it matched perfect. I would wipe the ding with alcohol, fair out if needed with some fine sandpaper, then dab the auto paint on. The stuff is real easy to use, dries in minutes, and buffs out great. TWO BUCKS a bottle.
You can get it in any color under the sun. AJ's Katrina damage is going to require me to pony up for a new rub rail paint job, but the 2 buck solution should work for you.
