Coating w epoxy vs cloth lay up

Just wondering, other than the obvious added strength gained by ensheathing plywood in fibreglass cloth and resin isn't just completely coating/saturating it in epoxy resin nearly as good at prventing rot?
I would assume that its better than painting or leaving it bare. (this is for none sunlight exposed areas of course)
Would I be making a big mistake by just coating the plywood for the substructure of the fibreglass cockpit in epoxy liquid only?
