Coal tar epoxy is a two part industrial paint applied to fuel tanks per goverment regulations on inground tanks. This has also been applied to fuel ranks in boats because they are in a wet enviroment. Aluminum will corrode, SS tanks will eventually rust as they are not all 316 SS but some 304 SS alloy is used . This of course has some iron in it. Please look under "Boat Building Tips" section at the top of the page and click under "installing fuel tanks." This will give it to you in more detail. If you do not protect your tank if it is metal you will have a much shorter life as it will rot quicker and leak sooner. Fiberglass or plastic of course this does not apply.
