Exhaust Optimized?

I currently have the big 6" Vernatone(?sp)-(12" Diameter) Muffler with Cummins B Series 330's. I'd like to know if anyone has forgone the muffler in place of optimizing space in the bilge (6" exhaust straight back no muffler, run outboard of the stringers)Should I add surge tubes if I do this.
I can't fit the big mufflers outboard like the 270 guys can and therefore have a challenge adding storage where right now my mufflers are.
I've rigged a 32' Levy boat that had a single 450 C series in it with no exhaust and it was quiet at the transom. Right now the boat I have is quieter at the transmom than at the engine boxes- so I'm thinking b.f.d what's a little more noise.
As always chime in I'd love to hear your thoughts. I can always as Cummins but what fun would that be?
