Don't laugh, but I have a friend over at MIT who wrote his thesis on collecting solar energy with a constellation of sattelites, converting the energy into microwaves and beaming the microwave energy down to coleection stations, where it is converted back to electric and thermal energy.

about 75% efficient, huge capital outlay and will never be instituted until we run out of fossil fuels.

But it would work.
