The BW velvet drive inline gear has no side or third gear inside. All models turn the same direction as the engine except for the 1.92:1 or 1.88:1, can't remember off hand, which turned opposite direction and had a weak reduction planetary ring gear which shattered at times.
If anything is loose inside it will clunk in both directions.
The fwd clutch assembly has 7 discs. When the spool valve is engaged to fwd, fluid flows from the pump into the fwd piston assembly and squeezes the plates together. Since there are so many the shaft starts to turn and loads the gear in a smooth fashion.
On reverse there are two plates that are twice the diameter and grabs not so smooth at times especially if the thrust washers are worn or there is play in the planetary reduction.
Nothing really to worry about. Very very rare does the 1.5:1 gear break anything inside. The plates just wear out and it slips.
Only way to kill them is to shift in and out of gear above 900 rpm.
650 to 750 is a good idle for gassers.
Do check and make sure there is nothing loose in the drive line.
