My undergrad accounting degree was earned in 1965, but still think the IRS has a "deductible" on the casualty losses, 10% of your AGI. Tom, the untimate beancounter, chime in, please.
Now on the other hand, that has been waived for us hurricane victims. Even my $150 deductible on my boat ins. is now deductible on my taxes since I'm in a diaster Parish. I had a nice tree at the camp blow down in Katrina and figured I'd get a big tax break for it too. Not so fast, Uncle Vic, the tax man said. Landscaping is not in the list of what you can deduct. Some mumbo-jumbo about reducing the tax basis of your property if you ever sell it.
On the other hand, any employee we hire at the office that comes from a diaster Parish, since we are in a diaster Parish, gets us a tax credit (vs. a deduction, a buck for a buck deal). Our hiring criteria has relaxed some due to that. Can't type? We train. Actually a pretty good deal for us since some of our folks got displaced in Katrina. The magnitude of the footprint of Katrina is still not understood by the nation, nor even down here. The lame duck politicians here still don't understand. To make matters worse, I see the N.O. mayor said today that God wants N.O. to remain a black city and He sent the hurricane to remind us. Louis Farikan was here over the weekend saying the same or worse, and they must have been smoking the same stuff.
Sorry state of affairs. Tell your elected officials to avoid sending any money this way, our folks are poised to steal it.
UV, book it.
