I've used both the Z-wing and a standard type planer cleated off with an aftco roller type clip. The line from the cleat can be poly but you should have cable the last few feet. The clip is crimped with 600lb cable 6-10" behind the planer. Toothy critters will hit the planer occasionally so that's why the cable.
From time to time this method works well up here in the Northeast. It is a bother to keep clearing the cleated off line. Some of my friends have used the down rigger to control depth and ease the mess of storing cleated off rope.
Just make sure your downrigger can handle your trolling speed.
