Thanks guys -- now I am going to give away a trade secret. The way I have seen them fished is the planer is on a nylon line cleated off to the stern cleat, and the fishing line is attached to the planer via a release clip. I've seen the release clip attached to the back of the planer, as well as actually slide down the nylon line by the water pressure. In either case, once the fish hits, the planer is no longer attached.

I do use wire line for trolling for stripers and bluefish, but not for high speed trolling for the pelagics and that is what I want to get into.
