Phil,
You can have a mile long cable but it has to have the correct diameter for your current draw/resistance drop.
So if the cable is the correct size, then its not a problem.If you have Diesel in the 300hp range, no smaller than a 2/0.
If gas, no smaller than between #1 and 1/0 depending on size of engine and if it uses a standard or reduction gear starter.Smaller sizes will work, but because of the resistance, it will cause the voltage to drop and the starter will pull more current causing shorter starter life.
