After several overheat and near-overheat situations, we installed manual shut-downs on our B35. We had every kind of cooling problem you can imagine. Failed t-stats that stick shut, failed raw water pumps, clogged intakes, etc.

Basically a simple pull tab at the helm was attached to the fuel shut off on the Volvos by pull cable. It turned out to be very handy. I would not have a diesel boat without this installed.

Nothing quite as frustrating as having the temp alarm sound, watching the guage head over 220F, and the solenoid is not not working. You don't exactly have a lot of time to lift the hatch.

We also installed a couple of electronic flow sensors on the raw water intake lines. These were coupled to alarms at the helm. This was even better than the temp guages/temp alarms on the Volvo instrument panel.

If the raw water was impeded, the flow sensors went off, and you had extra time to shut down the engine and address the issue before the temperature gets to be a critical problem. We found that the Volvo stock temp alarms didn't sound until you were seconds away from overheat (if they sounded at all). It was a little irritating because the raw water alarms would sound when you first fired up and when you came down to idle after a run, but the peace of mind was well worth it. NB: The raw water alarms will not save you if the T-stat sticks closed inside the freshwater system. You would think that a T-Stat would be designed to fail only in "open" mode, but that's another story.
