A good deal is when you look back and everyone is as happy as the day you made the deal.
I passed on what would have been a good deal several years ago. At a Boat Show I was talking to a company that was a new dealer for these new high reving Diesels. They where lighter and quieter then the slow reving ones, a whole lot less money and they wanted to do an install in a 31 Bertram. I needed the boat to be available for pictures and the like and they would do the whole job for less then 30,000. I think 26-28,000. I took the info and talked to people about the motors and everyone I spoke to said, diesels can't rev that high and last, you will never get parts or service. I passed on the deal. They where Yanmars.
I had a chance to buy some GM diesels for dirt cheap, like 6 grand for a pair. They where the ones they stick in the pickups and Hummers. That would have been a bad deal.
Dad bought the Steyrs, good deal, bad deal too early to really say. If he had more money availble I am sure he would have gone another route, Yanmars. Not because they are better but because of the service and parts are readily available.
A good deal is only a good deal if you can afford it.
