Most of us use our boats for pure recreation. Part of that to me is maintaining the boat - I find it very satisfying to do my own work, properly equipped with tools, manuals, & parts. Being older and perhaps thus wiser than many of you, I know my limitations. The enemy of good is better - that last turn on the ratchet will strip the bolt if you are too lazy to go get the torque wrench out and read the manual for the torque value.
Tiem, patience & money is what it takes to enjoy your boat. Getting in a hurry makes up stressed out - shoot, I get paid good money at the office to do that. For example, AJ is busted up in a yard that got busted up, in a city that got busted up. I'm screwed if I expect a miracle to happen and she is back at my dock before things happen in a certain sequence, very slowly. I always pay my yard ahead of time, just eliminates one worry for all of us. I pay the Cummins Mid-South bill the day they fax it to me. I asked Sea Trac to order a new autopilot head for me, it came in yesterday but they can't go put in on until some other stuff is done by the yard. I told Bobby at SeaTrac to bill me now for the parts, they ain't my banker. Point is, by dealing with people you know or your friends know, being patient with them, paying them up front over the years, understanding the uncertainties of parts, shipping, etc, you end up generally getting the best service at fair prices. The wheel that squeaks the loudest generally gets pissed on.
