In Response To: What constitutes a good deal? (bruce)
Bruce,
Having been born into the boating industry I've seen a few trends up here in the Northeast. I've watched one of the biggest head boats out of Manasquan put in the latest and greatest Deutz diesels because he got a geat deal on them. Only have them fail on a regular basis for the first year until the bugs got worked out.
I've watched Detroits go away and Volvo come in followed by CAT and now Cummins and Yanmar. For awhile Peninsular was being put in the Blackwatch boats I worked on (YIKES!!!) and even some Lugger engines showed up.
The bottom line here has always been service. A fair majority of the under 35' boats out of Manasquan go noplace but to local fishing grounds and winter storage. We've had a good Volvo dealer here and he now has Yanmar, as I understand they do a good job. Cummins support is good in the area with the local Metropower tech living around the corner from us.
A "Good Deal" to folks around here is as simple as the best service and the lowest price. If these two are not in place then don't play. If its Cummins that's great If it's "Steyr" or "Bills Reliable Engines" who cares ultimately its the owners decision to live with. You or I can't "educate" everyone. The business lost to one off manufacturers only hurts for a little while eventually it all comes back.
I will add this if it was my boat and I planned to travel with it I'd stay with the basics Cummins or CAT, they have corporate distributors all over the place, proven product and aggressive warranties.
