I found it confusing also. So, I called the local Coast Guard office, and spoke to them. We talked for awhile, and the crux of it is that I was told that approved hose is OK in the engine compartment--don't have to use metal lines. I think the nipples on the carbs and other fittings have to be metal. From what I remember, hose and metal fittings and you're fine--no plastic of course.
