What constitutes a good deal?

Let me ask that question to you all and I am interested in good answers for my own information.
First as a repairer of your play things for 35 years, pretty much the first thing asked of me 90% of the time is when can you get to it and when will it be done?
Time is an important factor and I'm sure much more important to those who boat where the season is limited.
The Steyr thread along with others in the past has got me baffled with this logic.
If you have to go to multiple dealers to get parts, some may be states apart, then pay shipping costs which are thru the roof, or wait ten days orering out of the country and make sure all the parts are correct to reapir the job, then find someone who will be willing to work on the engines, how can anyone justify that down time in their mind especially since the posted pricing is not far off from readily available engines?
What about reliability. Would you be willing to set across the Gulf from key west to mexico and feel that you could make it with no problems? Can you go out everyday for a month and not break down?
If not, why use them?If the answer is money, I havn't seen a situation yet where if a boater kept a boat with bastard engines in it for at least a few years and didn't have the price of a good factory rebuild at least in it or more.
Labor cost in changing out a gas to diesel is the same reguardless of who you put in.
Now there are those who maybe just don't like the options out there in Cummins or Yanmar or don't like the monopoly they have.
Or those that would like to do something different and don't care about "down time".Finding qualified help is a problem also. Maybe the local C and Y shops do crappy work and over charge for that crappy work.
In my boat the bottom line would be can I reasonably be assured that each time I go out I will come back and if I breakdown can I get parts.
Being able to fix anything on a boat, parts is the only issue with me and I would not have anything but a major player in the hole.
I tend to think in black and white though.
I leave the shades of gray to painters and lawyers.
