Gas repower questions

The manual for my 1980 B28 specifies Mercruiser 233's with velvet 1.5's. The boat when purchased by me last year, and still currently has chrysler 240's with velvet 1.5's. The hatches are blocked up about 1 inch to clear carbs. Obviously this motor tranny combo is inncorrect. The best advice regarding the chryslers was to thow them in the trash and I wish I did so sooner. I want to repower with 300hp MPI Horizons with ZF's to eliminate the need for counter rotating motor. One motor dealer told me the engines would have to be slid back about ten inches becuase of the shorter length of bell housing and tranny. This would also result in an increased rear height of the motor in order to maintian shaft angle. Has anyone here already been through this? Will Mercuisers with zf's physically fit in the engine bay without costly deck modifications? Will zf's constitute a change in prop pitch, or do they make gear reduction choices as well.? I would like to use my current running gear with the 17 by 17 props. The shafts are 1 1/8. Any advice to help me get the ball rolling would be great.
