Removal is pretty easy.
Before you start, put some corrosion-X or PB blaster on the top bolts of the helm and steeriing wheel nut. The helm pump is aluminum and the bolts are stainless. Don't be surpised if you have to soak them more then once to get them off. If you have acorn style nuts with studs, that's OK too and will come apart more easily.
1. Relieve the air pressure from the tank.
2. Mark the lines to make sure you can put them back in the right place (I use zippy ties and labels)
3. Always better to use a line wrench on brass fittings.
4. Remove one line at a time, you will need to have some type of plastic cap or plug to cap the lines and pump just to keep the dripping down to a mininum. I used plastic lunch bags and zippy ties on the lines, plug blanks on the helm. After the lines have been removed you can remove the steering wheel and 4 bolts holding the pump to the helm. I had an aluminum hub on the top and the helm was bolted thru it underneath. Box up the pump and send it to Charan. Be sure to have them send you a complete set of O-rings for the ends of the lines when re-installing. If you have two helms, might as well send them both. Strip sand and paint the aluminum hub while you are waiting for the pumps to come back.
This is also a good time to drain and refill with aircraft hydro fluid. We will save the installation for another thread.
