I totally agree with JP's points about plywood, nothing wrong with it at all, and if you take some time and impregnate them with resin it will last more then 30 years...

nonetheless I still didn't wan't to use plywood. I found that some cutting boards that you can purchase in a super market make an excellent backing material. Unlike starboard they have a ridged surface which seems to make a better bond with 5200 or sekaflex.
