Sorry to see the damage, lucky it was caught. Buy that guy a beer or six.
In the future you may want to put a bulkhead in just under the cabin entrance, this would stop water from moving to the forward position in the boat. It also doesn't allow any juice from the engine room to make its way forward and stink the place up. There are a handful of boats around me that have done this with good results. Our boat is next on the list
You keep the forward bilge pump there just in case but you also install a new mid ship pump to take the bulk of the work. Mount the pump as low to hull as you can, bracket it off your new bulkhead and then mount the float switch wherever you like. The low pump lets you manually pull alot more water out of the bilge then when mounted on the plywood shelf.
I've alway been a fan of compartmentalized bilge areas.
