John,
First, I would do a resistance check on that wire. The resistance should be close to zero. Second, peal back that insulation and take a look at the copper itself. Did it look like it got hot (brittle, discolored). Your connections in the picture are the standard automotive type (non sealed) that Bertram used on my boat as well.I say this because I had lots of wire that I pulled out of my B26 with "spots" on it. Turned out it was where electrical tape or other fasteners discolored it, but I am not sure yours was the case.
When I rewired my boat I did the following:
I ran new red 10GA tinned wire from the battery side of the master switch for the house battery's (so the main power to it could never be switched off) and put an inline water tight fuse holder within 14" of the battery switch. ABYC does not like alot of wires running directly to the battery. This wire goes straight to the same switch you have for off, on, manual. I also put an LED on the FB so any time the pump was in operation, (12 volt LED with one connection on the manual side of the switch and the other to ground this way if I turned on the switch or the float switch powered the pump, I would know). My original wire color was a reddish orange if I recall correctly.
Second, repeat the entire process but from the second battery (or an engine battery) for the second switch and second pump. If you can, mount this pump's float switch just an inch or so higher then the first pump float switch so it cuts on as a secondary.
Two pumps, two circuits, two fuses and two switches. My surveyor was grinning from ear to ear when he saw what I did. Just don't leave both your switches in the off position.
I believe I read most fires come from AC current problems aboard boats, but DC can as well if things are not properly fused.
I see people use black automotive type wire looms in their boats. When this stuff burns, it drips little fire balls all over the bilge. That can't be good. Make sure your wire meets the ABYC or CG for heat ratings and the loom covers too.
