John - I can promise you the jumper is not stock. In a stock configuration, each bilge pump has its own hot wire from the batteries. Also, Bertram never used the open end lugs like the one on the right end of the jumper. I suspect someone got lazy years ago when one of the bilge pumps went dead and instead of tracing the wrie, just made up the jumper. Yes, the black area is an overheat. I'll bet you a dollar to a donut that that red wire is automotive and not tinned, so once moisture gets in it, it corrodes and yep, will run the resistance way up.

Before you rewire the whole boat, just figure out where the dead pump wire is and replace or repair it. You got lucky.
