Some thoughts I've been having every winter as I work and spend like crazy on the LightningShack.
Don't try to find a good deal on a fixer upper. The real deals are on the boats that have been fixed up already.
Boat owners never get back all of what they put into a boat... so when you buy you might as well be on the right side of the transaction. Buy something that has already had too much money spent on it, there are plenty of them out there.
Finance everything you can't afford. The cost of coughing up an extra couple hundred bucks a month to pay off a loan, will pale in comparison to the money you will spend even doing the most remedial repairs. Fiberglass, resin, lumber, hardware, paint, tools, thru-hulls, valves, hoses, running gear, we haven't even started yet, etc... cost a fortune especially at retail prices. With the 28 as you described it, I would expect MINIMUM upgrades and upkeep to cost you 15 to 25k a year.
Older redone boats demand tons of time, older fixer uppers are more like careers.
I don't regret the time and money I spent, but when you look back and consider the cost... and where you'd be if you spent more day one, well it wouldn't be fair not to share that insight with somoeone who is considering a purchase.
Good Luck with whatever you choose, you always be proud to own a Bertram.
Mike
