On the Bottom there should be a fill screw. Put the oil and the compass in the refrigrtator or the freezer before filling. This will allow the fluid to expand after filling so as to keep out any chance for bubbles. Fill to overflowing and replace the fill plug.

When I filled mine I got oil from an aircraft place at alliare airport. Very light weight highly refined oil that wonn't yellow in the sun. It was a while ago so I don't remember the weight oil, just that it is the same used in aircraft compasses. No one at the marine stores carried it.
