Kevin

I agree with most of the other, that the submerged engine would scare away from this route. I believe that your comment about nickle and diming to death may me correct.

As Jim mentioned, I went through the repower process about 6 years ago. After much research as to which engine to install, I contacted Tony Athens about doing the parts of the job that I either did not feel comfortable with or did not have time to do. I thought the Cummins 4B-250 was the right motor. As many know, Tony is considered the west coast Cummins guru. Tony proceded to convince me that I did not want the Cummins and that the Yanmar was the correct motor for the B28. The Cummins is much taller and would absolutely require work to raise the engine hatches. Also he felt the Cummins simply had too much vibration for the B28 install. The Yanmars are much smoother. I have never regretted the decission to go with the Yanmars!

As Jim mentioned, my boat is a 1975 with the small engine boxes. The Yanmars were fit in without raising the decks. The transmissions are Hurth 630As with the 8 degree down angle and a ratio of 1.5x/1. I opted to remove the old wooden engine supports that are bolted/glassed to the stringers and bulkheads. If you are making the job simpler for the do-it-yourselfer, you can keep the original wood and use the Twin Disk 5011 transmission with 11 degree down angle.

A few more items to take into account:
You will need to new shafts, 1-3/8" or 1-1/2" depending on gear ratio. You will need bigger diameter props. These two together mean new struts. Also new shaft logs. A lot of new wiring, and the list goes on and on.

Check out the Bertram 28 repower at SBMar.com for some pics and write up on my boat.

Kevin, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask, either here or by email.

Ernest, How about a new thread with an update on your project.

Bill
